Well hello again. It's been a few days! When I sit down to write another blog entry, I find myself being distracted by something else going on! I figured I would share some good news before I start updating you all on Megan's progress in the last couple days. We learned yesterday that Megan's discharge date from inpatient rehab is June 28th! We are very excited to say the least! Megan's friends that came in got to hear it directly from her. She was so excited, she could barely figure out what she was trying to say!
Megan has had a busy day of therapy for the past couple days. Sometimes she has therapy from 930-4, with a little break in there for lunch and a little rest. She is very tired in the evenings, but leave it to Megan to find out where they sell coffee at Spaulding to get her daily fix of caffeine. She gets her normal coffee from Dunkin Donuts in the cafeteria. They even have the caramel flavor that she likes.
This week they have been working with Megan on improving her walking in PT. One of their goals for discharge is for Megan to be able to walk on her legs, but with someone watching her. At this point, her physical therapist ties an ace bandage around her foot and knee to keep her right foot from turning out onto her ankle. She uses a three-pronged cane in her left hand. Her therapist has really stressed the fact that the cane, bandage, and potential leg brace, are all just tools for Megan to use while she is getting her strength back. They are not permanent! Her therapist then holds her right quad and around her waist to control her movements. We have seen improvements everyday. Sometimes Megan gets a little frustrated with her progress because it isn't as fast as she would like, but we just keep telling her to be patient! (even though we want her to improve just as quickly!)
OT is focused on making daily activities a little bit easier. Her therapist wants to work with her next week on putting in her contact lenses. Megan is just glad she won't have to wear her glasses all the time! I actually got a chance to go to her OT today. She did a group session. Megan wasn't so excited about going, but I think by the time she left she realized that it wasn't so bad! The goals of the session were to work on coordination, memory, involvement in society, and interacting with other stroke victims. We first passed a ball around the table to practice remembering people's names. This worked on memory. You had to say the name of the person you were passing the ball to. Next was current events. I have to say we did not do our homework because we didn't know we had to bring a piece of the news to the session...oops! After that they took out these mini hand held hockey sticks. We hit a ball around the table to see how many times we could hit it in a row without the ball falling off the table. While we were hitting the ball, the therapists told everyone to count out loud. The counting was a little too fast for Megan, but she was able to say the numbers she knew Finally, we had to roll a ball at a cone in front of everyone and try to knock it off the table.
Finally, I missed speech today, but I was able to sit in on Megan's session yesterday. Her SLP showed her pictures of objects and had her name them. Next was action pictures. Megan had to say "He is _____" (riding a bike, driving a car, reading a book." They spend a long time on this. I've noticed that Megan has difficulty with differentiating between pronouns. If we ask her "do you want a coffee?" she answers "she does" rather than "I do." She has difficulty with we, she/he, and I.
I think that is it for now! Until next time, Go Bruins and stay MeganSTRONG!
